Prelude from the mouth of Steve Rodgers
As I sit down to write this - I realize that it is a daunting task. How do I convey 10+ years of Touring and recording into a neat little package for everyone to read. The last thing that those ten years have been is neat and tidy. There are hundreds of stories, documenting both great times of success and downright awful times in the pit of doom. The history would be simple if we could just post up a list, composed of album, tour, album, tour, album tour and so on.
However we would be cheating our friends & fans out of the grit . Cheating you out of the real deal, and misrepresenting ourselves. The thing that has made us survive and continue writing songs is our honesty with each other and our audience. We decided early on not to jump onto any trendy musical bandwagon. We have always chosen to sound like ourselves. The “music business” hasn’t been able to figure out what to do with us. We don’t fit into a tidy little box and we don’t follow the trend. We don’t sound enough like the current biggest band - we have always sounded like Mighty Purple. We will continue to make albums and play shows because we are in music for the love of creating and sharing it. We have continued making music for the community it generates is amazing and the relationships we have made over the years are extremely important to us.

What we have decided to do is touch on the basics once per week you will see an update to the story.
Over the coming months we will be posting excerpts from our past tour Journals. Jonny and I both kept relatively consistent and detailed journals from the road. Our journals are very different so we hope to give you a broad picture of what our touring lives have been like. Our stories will take you from the shores of California to the streets of New Orleans to gritty performance halls in downtown London. We hope you will check this page out once in a while as we will be adding to it fairly frequently. We would also love to hear from you. If you have a Mighty Purple story, email us and we will consider posting it on this page. We will also be seeking entries from former members such as Will Mix and Adrian Van de Graff; they spent many years on the road with us. I am sure they also have much to share.
I have been told many times to write a book so maybe this is a good starting exercise. I am always open to feedback you can contact me at

Before they were Mighty Purple

Mighty Purple was berthed out of Steve and Jon’s first band "Only Two" an even dumber name than Mighty Purple. While still in High school "Only Two", played a show every opportunity they got. Every weekend was another adventure to seedy bars, High school cafeterias and coffeeshops throughout the Tri-state area. For many of the shows, their parents had to come because the band was not old enough to be in the clubs. The band quickly built a young, loyal, local following and began to record their first demos in their drummer Clint’s basement. All of the first recordings were awful and did not portray the songs as they were live. The band continued playing locally with Steve, Jon, Clint the drummer and childhood friend & bass player Adrian.
They found a home at The Moon, an all ages night club in New Haven, CT. Local Open Mic legend Ed Leonard gave Only Two their first show at the moon. On the bill that night were Spring Heeled Jack and the Who Whos. This would be the first of many shows at the moon. Their shows were well attended there and they made friends with the house sound guys Dave Kone & Nathan Jannett. One night after a show Dave Kone asked if he could record them sometime, they agreed to just about everything back then and they started working on their first real demo. Recording in their drummer’s basement was a bit of a trick, they had to rush through takes in between the drummer’s 2 year old sister’s nap schedule. Over the course of 3 days they had their first 2 song demo. They sent the cassette to James Velvet at New Haven’s WPLR local bands show. Two weeks later the whole band all of their friends and their parents crowded around a box radio in hopes the demo would be aired. The anticipation grew into nervous sweaty brows and stomach pains. Songs came on by local legends such as Those Melvens and 100 Faces.
The Program was nearing the end and still no song by Only Two. Then it happened. Cheers erupted in the room and then every one got quiet as the Only Two song “I Remember Jonny" was played. They thought to themselves we’ve made it... we’re a real band...
People will know who we are now. That was only the very beginning.

More to come next week
